The active involvement of parents directly impacts the student in the learning and teaching relationship. Teachers and parents always have things to share with the student. Both sides are so interested to communicate and to work together with the common goal of teaching and identifying strategies that can improve the child's learning.
How parents help students?
As a former student and a mother of two, developing relationships and building trust are two essential elements that potential educators and parents bring together in the processes of schooling. When parents are engaged in their child's learning process, they are able to enforce academic and numeric literacy that can help with the homework. The parents' role is key in influencing the child through every learning step by providing consistent positive support. It is therefore encouraged for parents to participate in the school events, celebrations, multicultural days and different school activities.
One of the effective ways to work with parents is regular “Parent-Teacher Conference” that is a step toward greater engagement of parents on school.
By focusing on student's specific strengths and weaknesses in different subjects, they share information about the skills, competency and even behavioral problems. Both sides, parents and teachers, need to provide support when the children are struggling.
As Professor D. Pushor mentioned: “Parents’ engagement in their children’s learning makes a difference – to their children and to their children’s achievement and success in a wide range of educational outcomes. It can make a difference to educators and to the landscape of schools as well…a shared world” (Pushor, 2007, p. 11).
