Racism
“I watched what had been marvellous, cooperative, wonderful, thoughtful children turn into nasty, vicious, discriminating little 3 graders in a space of fifteen minutes.” (Elliott,1985)
We are educators and our duty is to create a
good, comfortable learning environment. I think every child is naïve and very
sincere. What we do is carving, and shaping them for the future, starting from
the family’s base and personal capacity. They all come from different families
with different backgrounds and you treat them the same, working to build
healthy, educated, respectful citizens that can live and work together in
unity.
Racism
is an ideology that either directly or indirectly states that one group is
inherently superior to another. This happens all the time, not only with the
visible minorities, but also with all minorities, such as emigrants, religion,
etc. Maybe it is automatic to judge from the cover, which is an easy way to
judge somebody that looks different but our duty is to educate kids to see
deeper than what is on the surface. What a teacher can do and the big influence
that a teacher has towards the students is immense. You as a teacher must be
able to have different ideas working against racism and make everybody equal in
class, the strategy you would use would change depending on the age group that
you are teaching. Ms. Elliott. had her
fantastic powerful idea of “Darling Lesson” by making every body live what it is
like to experience racism. She made all the students understand what that
means. There is a big difference between telling it and living it.
The pain is something that you can’t explain or tell, it is a feeling
that you experience, which can give a very dark colour and condition to your entire
life and your being. "Students who belong to groups that have been negatively
stereotyped are likely to perform less well in situations"
Elliott (1985).
