Bullying and Prevention Strategies:
I have been on both sides of the bullying spectrum; being bullied and becoming the bully. Watching the videos and reading about bullying took me for a stroll down memory lane. I remember being the bully in highschool and hating it, but I do know why I did it. I hated being picked on myself so my instinct was to bully others.
I don’t think people understand how much bullying can affect someone. I can relate this topic to myself and to other articles, but the most important is text to world. Bullying does not stop at the school level, unfortunately, bullying does get carried into the work place and sometimes even into the home. The different forms of bullying are visible; physical, verbal and social (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2012). The most recent one is electronic or cyber bullying; this type if bullying is not always visible to parents, teachers and other adults. There are great online resources offered by the Ontario government for parents who want to help their child from either being the bully or getting bullied.
In the video, it was mentioned that children don’t always tell you what’s going on at school, it is important to ask specific questions. I have younger cousins, and I always ask them ‘what was the most exciting thing that happened today at school?' The responses I get back are amazing; it is important to get involved in your child’s school life, if you prompt them just a little more they will tell you what is going on. Bullying can be prevented with communication and educating children about why it is not okay to bully, and getting down to the underlying problem. I know if someone had talked to me when I was younger I would have stopped bullying at an earlier stage. Communication is the key!
